Shiatsu is a massage-based therapy that combines clothes-on massage, manipulation and healing. It originated in Japan, but its roots are in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Like Acupuncture, Shiatsu works on the "Qi", or vital energy, that circulates around the body. This energy should flow smoothly through specific channels known as meridians. Shiatsu means, "Finger pressure" in Japanese. It is used at specific points along the meridians to ensure there is appropriate feeling in all these points
A Shiatsu treatment generally lasts about an hour. However, the first session will be longer, as the Therapist will take the client's detailed history as an aid to diagnosis. The treatment itself will vary accordingly to the type and severity of the problem the client is experiencing. The techniques used can vary from a gentle rocking motion to promote muscle relaxation, to strong massage for deeply locked up muscles. A Shiatsu treatment will usually include stretches (based on yoga principles), as well as finger pressure work and manipulation. Recommendations are generally made for diet and exercises to be done at home. Loose fitting clothing should be worn. This should be lightweight, and give a full range of unrestricted movement. Tracksuits, sweatshirts, T-Shirts, leggings etc., are recommended. It is also best not to eat for at least an hour before a treatment. Treatment normally takes place on a futon at floor level. If this causes a problem, a massage table or chair can be used.
The main difference involves the changing of muscle memory. Where there are differences in the strength of muscles, and this causes a problem, Acupuncture will calm things down, but will not change the relative strength of the muscles concerned. Shiatsu will cause the body to realise that it needs to make changes to the relative strength of these muscles.
