Nutrition Therapy

Hilda Solomons

Hilda Solomons, Dip. ION. BANT

Qualified from the Institute for Optimum Nutrition in 1999.

It is often said 'You are what you eat'. This is partly true, but the vital factor is ensuring that nutrients reach every cell of your body. Therefore it is more appropriate to say 'You are not just what you eat but what you absorb'. Nutrition Therapy aims to do this. It is a form of complementary medicine that uses physiology, biochemistry, pathology, nutrition, naturopathic techniques and diagnostic procedures to determine an individual's nutrition needs. Modern day stresses push our adaptive abilities to the limit, which often results in ill health. Nutritional Therapy aims to delicately fine tune and strengthen the body, enabling it to function correctly and heal itself. Imbalances in the body can be identified and corrected in order to achieve and maintain optimum health

What does a consultation involve?
First you complete a detailed questionnaire which you return several days before the consultation. This enables an in-depth analysis of possible deficiencies and other areas of concern before the consultation. The consultation lasts one hour, during which time your health problems are discussed along with the goals and changes you may need to make to your diet and lifestyle to achieve optimum health. An individual tailor made supplement programme will be devised to suit your personal needs.
Just as no two people are alike, no two programmes are the same. The rate at which improvements can be made cannot always be predicted. However, after the cause of a particular problem has been identified and removed, and you begin to undertake the programme, the natural healing process will begin.

A sensible, balanced and realistic approach to nutrition will be adopted. Although some diets may appear restrictive you will certainly not be expected to take on anything beyond your own individual capability. The goal is to provide practical methods of achieving optimum health and impart experience and techniques that have been found to be successful.
