What is Ear Candling?
A pleasant and gentle treatment of the ears, which has been used throughout
the world for many years. A hollow candle made from natural ingredients is
inserted into the ear canal and lit. This induces a revitalising heat upon
the head and ears which soothes, relaxes and relieves.
The History
Historical roots of ear candling have been passed down to us dating back as
far as 2500BC. Evidence of its use have been found in North and South
America, Asia, Egypt and Greece. A major ingredient in the ear candles is
beeswax and it is thought the development of ear candling came to be after bees were domesticated.
In the western world we attribute the use of the candles from Hopi Indians - Hopi meaning peaceful people.
How Ear Candling Works?
When the candle is inserted into the ear canal and lit, a chimney effect
occurs, causing light suction and the movement of the flame gently massages
the eardrum. This induces a pleasant feeling of warmth and a balance of
pressure in the ears and sinuses. It is soothing, and the vapour draws out
impurities such as earwax, toxins and foreign materials. This is drawn into
the filter at the end of the candle. The treatment brings a sense of
wellbeing and relaxation. The ingredients are natural - pure beeswax, honey
extracts, sage essential oil, chamomile, St Johns Wort and untreated cotton.
The treatment is completed with a facial massage to boost the immune
systems, improve lymphatic drainage and soothe.
Who Can It Help?
Ear candling is useful for a wide range of conditions such as excessive or
compacted ear wax, pressure regulation in cases of sinusitis, rhinitis, glue
ear, headaches and migraine. In can also benefit the symptoms of tinnitus
and noises in the ears, and snoring.
The treatment is often described as de-stressing and relaxing.
