Joanne Hutton, Bowen Technique Therapist BTAA ITEC
What it is and how it works
The Bowen Technique is a remarkable holistic therapy that allows the body to rebalance and heal itself. A Bowen session consists of a series of light touch movements on specific points on the body. The Bowen practitioner uses either thumbs or forefingers in a series of very precise cross-fibre rolling movements on the skin and this triggers nerve impulses to the brain, stimulates energy flow and via a feedback loop , activates the body's natural resources to heal itself. A course of a few Bowen sessions addresses the whole body and it is often found that conditions other than that being treated are resolved, whether being a structural, physiological or even emotional problem.
Sessions last between 45-60 minutes and are generally one week apart. A few sessions are often sufficient for substantial and long lasting relief, although further sessions may sometimes be required.
Who Can It Help?
There is no forceful manipulation used with Bowen unlike many other hands-on therapies. It is very gentle and considered safe to use on anyone from new-born infants to the elderly. Some of the wide range of conditions that may respond well to a Bowen treatment are: back pain and sciatica,
neck, arm and shoulder problems, RSI and tennis elbow, knee and ankle problems, pelvic (tilt, leg length, hip imbalance), sports injuries, stress injuries, stress and tension symptoms, respiratory problems, menstrual irregularities, migraine and headaches, allergies, asthma and hay-fever, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, polycystic ovaries (PCOS), jaw problems, digestive problems, and pregnancy problems including infertility. Although it is a powerful tool for treating ailments and injuries, many people in good health enjoy regular treatments to maintain optimal body balance.
